What does this measure tell us?
NFPA 1851 Standard on Selection, Care, and Maintenance of Structural Fire Fighting Protective Ensembles is written for end users of structural fire fighting protective ensembles and ensemble elements to be able to inspect, maintain, and care for the protective ensembles and elements they use during structural fire fighting operations. The overall protection and safety of fire fighting personnel is not only dependent on adequate protective clothing, but is equally dependent on the organization’s policies, training, and administration of the correct use of the proper protective clothing in fire fighting situations. This measure enables the District to apply the necessary administrative controls to assure our members have the highest level of personal protective equipment while providing the provisions for this equipment to be maintained in the most serviceable condition possible.

An effective Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Program is an essential component in assuring our human resources are properly protected with the highest level of and well-maintained fire suppression protective clothing and equipment while engaged in emergency or training operations. This commitment is directly linked to maintaining an effective Safety Program with the expected outcome that occupational injuries and fatalities can significantly be reduced or eliminated through the implementation of such a program.
