What does this measure tell us?

NFPA 472 Professional Competencies of Responders to Hazardous Materials Incidents establishes minimum requirements to assure a safe and effective response to hazardous material incidents.  This standard identifies the competencies for each of the five levels of responders.  In Washington State, fire department personnel are, as a minimum, to be trained to the First Responder - Operations Level.  Those personnel serving on the Snohomish County Hazardous Materials Response Team shall meet the competencies for Hazardous Materials – Technician Level.  Those personnel serving as an Incident Commander at a hazardous materials incident shall in addition of being trained to the First Responder – Operations Level, be trained in the competencies for Hazardous Materials – Incident Commander Level.  This measure further outlines those components and job tasks necessary to maintain an effective hazardous materials response program within our own agency as well as a participating member of the Snohomish County Hazardous Materials Response Team.

Goal being measured:

Pursue Traditional and Non-traditional Effective Partnerships With Other Organizations.

Incidents involving the uncontrolled release of hazardous materials are becoming more commonplace with an increased amount of synthetic materials being produced and transported through Snohomish County on a daily basis via highways, rail, air, and waterways.  The events of September 11, 2001 require that local first responders be prepared, equipped and trained to effectively handle the various types of terrorism acts found in our world today.  Having members trained and functioning as part of the Snohomish County Hazardous Materials Response Team will help enable us to provide the most favorable outcome to our citizens in the event of an uncontrolled release or terrorism event.
