School-Aged Fire and Injury Prevention Program
At Snohomish County Fire District #7, we believe that most unintentional injuries are not random accidents; they are predictable and preventable. In addition, we feel that safe behavior is a result of proper attitudes and values about personal safety and wellness.
With this in mind, Fire District 7 utilizes the Risk Watch program to teach school-aged children about fire and injury prevention. Risk Watch lessons can be taught in classrooms, in community groups such as Cub scouts, Girl Scouts, after-school programs, and any other place where children are interested in learning about safety.
Risk Watch is designed to help children and their families create safer homes and communities by teaching them the skills and knowledge they need to make positive choices about their personal safety and well-being. Risk Watch seeks to prevent the major unintentional injuries that threaten children in this age group. The following topics are covered in the Risk Watch curriculum:
- Motor Vehicle Safety
- Fire and Burn Prevention
- Choking, Suffocation and Strangulation Prevention
- Poisoning Prevention
- Falls Prevention
- Firearms Injury Prevention
- Bike and Pedestrian Safety
- Water Safety
Fire District 7 has a limited amount of the Risk Watch curriculum available for a two-week loan period. You may also utilize the lesson plans available on the National Fire Protection’s (NFPA) Risk Watch website: www.riskwatch.org.
