Snohomish County Fire District 7 is committed not only to fighting fires, but also to preventing them. As a result, Fire District 7 offers youth firesetting intervention through their Fire Stoppers program.
The Fire Stoppers program is used to assess a child’s risk of continued fire setting behavior and to establish the best course of action to correct the child’s behavior. Specially trained fire district personnel conduct an assessment of the child to determine his/her risk level and provide fire safety education to the family.
Our Fire Stoppers program consists of two sessions lasting approximately 45 minutes per session. We require the child’s parent(s)/guardian(s) to participate in the sessions, as we provide information regarding fire survival and fire prevention for the entire family. When fire setting behavior is determined to be indicative of more serious problems, referral to specialized agencies may be recommended.

If you are concerned about your child’s fascination with fire:
- Make sure you have working smoke alarms on every level of your home and outside all sleeping areas.
- Create and practice a Home Fire Escape Plan with everyone in your family.
- Keep all matches and lighters locked up, out of sight from children.
- Teach your children that matches and lighters are not toys. They should immediately tell an adult if they find matches or lighters.
- Contact our Public Educator to schedule an appointment for the Fire Stoppers program.
